Why would feminists come up with the Equal Rights Amendment, almost get it passed and then stop caring about it?

Have they stopped caring about it? Look around. When was the last time you saw a feminist even use the abbreviation 'ERA', let alone say how we should pass it? Why are they against a proposed amendment that THEY wrote?

Feminists loved the ERA with the proposed Hayden Rider attached. The Hayden Rider amends the ERA to make it one-sided and not at all equal. With the Hayden Rider, discrimination favoring women and disadvantaging men would be perfectly legal. Many actual equal rights supporters dropped support for an ERA containing the Hayden Rider. It should come as no surprise that feminist organizations have been the exact opposite.

They Hayden Rider to the ERA states:

"The provisions of this article shall not be construed to impair any rights, benefits, or exemptions now or hereafter conferred by law upon persons of the female sex."

That is, women could keep their existing and future special protections that men did not have."
