What's the logic behind using artistic drawings to support transitional fossils?

The fossil record is notoriously incomplete. For example, we don't have a transitional fossil between Longisquama insignis and Archaeopteryx. We do have hypotheses of what a transitional fossil may look like. Since there is no fossil available, drawings are made to depict these hypothetical species. Keep in mind that drawings based on hypotheses are not scientific fact.
