Is it okay for me to leave my dog in the car with the AC running?

This afternoon I ll be bringing my dog to the park in town, along with running some errands but I m afraid that people will get the wrong idea if they see her in the car by herself. I m just going into the bank, for no longer than five minutes, and I ll be leaving the spare key in the ignition to allow the AC to run and also to lock the doors.

It really depends on where you live. Morally it may not be a good idea. Where I live, it's illegal to leave a dog in the car. This one couple tried to leave their staffie in the car on a semi-warm day, and I wasn't having any of it. I confronted them about their dog and told them that it was illegal to leave a dog in the car without supervision. They rolled own the window and literally said, "You supervise him." and just walked off. They said they wouldn't be gone long. I watched and made friends with the dog for three hours. When they finally came back, they were actually shocked to see I was still there.

My friend did something simliar and the dog locked her out of the car. Is your dog crated or seatbelted in, so that it can change the gears?

I have remote start and the car will run for 15 min, with the air on and locked. I use that feature a lot for when I'm traveling to and from long distance dog shows and need to stop at a restroom. My dogs are crated with fans on the crates.

If this is something you do, it may be worth looking into installing a remote start. BTW, I love the feature, not just because of the dogs, but because I can start the car and heat it up in the middle of the winter, I get into a nice warm car :)

No don't! The first time I did I forgot to push the window lock button and my four dogs were running around in the parking lot. The second time I remembered the lock but something happened to the a/c and it quit blowing cold. Thank god I wasn't gone long either time because both times could have had terrible outcomes and I would have never forgave myself. Mine love to ride but unless I have a passenger to stay with them they don't go!! I sometimes bring them treats back.

We have done this with our show cats on trips. We can lock the car with A/C on and eat our lunch or supper and come back and everything is fine. Most people can hear the car running. Never had a problem.
