Am I required to change my number with the area code if I move out of state?

If I move out of state but still have my same cell phone number with the area code of the old city I lived in, will I ever be required to change my cell phone number to the city cell phone number? Would I have to change the area code or could I always use an area code for a different state?

I know with a landline if I move, I would have to use the area code within the city and definitely change my landline number if I move, right? But what if it is a cell phone number?

I used to live in San Diego and had a cell phone number from there. I moved away in 2002 and still have the same number. The only problem I have with it is if I call AAA road service's 1-800 number I always get the California operator and they have to transfer me to the state I am in.

U.S., right?

As long as you keep paying the bill, you can keep your old number, including the old area code, forever.
