Hello. I want to put in a dead hdd into my Windows 10 laptop, as I want to recover items from it. I am not sure if this is a good idea or bad idea, and I want to know what will happen if I do.

You run the risk of destroying the machine you plug it into...

If you want to try recovering files on a mostly-dead drive (you cannot from a completely dead drive) you get an appropriate external drive case that uses USB or just plugs the drive in... there are several kinds. You use the external drive mechanism and plug that into your computer of choice. If the drive spins up and is readable, there you go. If not, then you are out the $25-$30 you spent on the external gear, which you can always get a new drive to install and use it anyway.

Data recovery from damaged or dead drives is done by professionals for between 1000$US and 10,000$US

If the Drive is DEAD it will not operate at all.
