On a motorcycle why do you have to downshift gears when stopping?

Hello i'm new to bikes to get my first one and was wondering why cant you just use the brakes to stop yourself instead of downshifting? For example say your in 4th gear and theres a stop coming up, why can't I just stop with the brakes and stay at 4th gear instead of downshifting?

1/ it's always good practice to be in the gear appropriate for your road speed ( in a cor or on a bike) so that if necessary you can accelerate away from trouble if that is the best option.
2/ once you have stopped you are going to have to find either neutral or first gear anyway. It is a LOT easier changing gear on a bike while it is moving - the gears need to be moving relative to each other or you're liable to find they wont slide into mesh.
3/ down changing will also held with slowing the bike & take a little of the load off your brakes. It's best to double your changes & use compression braking rather than banging it into a lower gear & slipping the clutch.

Downshifting, whether or not you ever let the clutch out, keeps the bike in the correct gear for the speed. There are times when you may need to accelerate to keep from getting rear-ended. Also when you stop shifting down is difficult if the trans is not spinning on most bikes, also from a stop you aren't going to start in a gear much above 1st.
