Regular trees. They have been stunted. Several different species are commonly used to make bonsais. Different techniques are used to stunt their growth. Different techniques are used to give them a distinctive look such as bending pieces of wire around the trunk. When a bonsai "farmer" sets out to produce a "crop" he starts many more trees than he wished to end up with. The process of stunting growth kills a great many trees.
