Just tell your mom that you have started having periods, and you need some pads. Believe me -- she has been expecting you to begin having periods ever since you entered puberty, and the fact that you finally have won't faze her in the least.
The fact that you say the pad was "scrunched up" in the middle makes me wonder: Did you remember to remove the paper covering from the adhesive strip on the pad before you put it in your panties?
Yes .. when you wipe after you use the bathroom while having your period, you will wipe blood, if you are not using a tampon.
When you're in bed and you have no pad, it probably won't make a mess. You don't usually "bleed" very much while you are lying still and sleeping. If you want, you can put a towel under your hips, to play it safe. In the morning, ask to borrow one of your mom's pads.
"Spotting" can be considered as the first sign of a menstrual period. It is, in fact, your period; the heavy blood flow will be noticeable within a few hours.
