Why do people in the U.K. not go to restaurants nearly as much as Americans?

if you go to the U.k. or anywhere else in Europe...you are not going to find a large variety of chain restaurants like Applebees, , TGIF's , and etc.
Update: well,,,,demand is there more ...but why? why not in UK the same?

I wouldn't really class TGIF etc as serious restaurants. They are more like slightly upmarket fast food outlets. We have them and various other chains, mostly in towns and cities.

However, we have countless independent restaurants offering a huge variety of British and international cuisine.

Additionally, it's quite normal for a pub to have a restaurant, especially in the countryside.

I live in a rural area, yet within half an hour I can find somewhere to eat British, French, Indian, Thai, Chinese, American, Italian or Turkish cuisine.
