Should I buy a speaker amplifier?

I bought an old receiver and speakers at a ecosale for $10. I bought a wire to check if the receiver works ($5) and when plugging in my headphones I get great quality sound. Problem is I can t get the speakers to output anything. I was thinking that the receiver output may be broken so I was wondering if it d be worth the $10 for a new amplifier to see if the speakers actually do work?

The speakers are connected via a copper cable so I have no way of checking if they work unless I buy a new amplifier to plug them into.
Update: Thank you so much for your guys' help.

The model I am using is a pioneer SX-6 receiver connected to two Aiwa bass monitors. The cables have been connected to the "A" speaker plug in in the back but I don't hear any sound. I tried rubbing AA batteries on the wires (according to a wiki search) to see if there is a signal and I couldn't hear any. I have a feeling the pickup for the copper wires may be busted in the receiver.
